Syringomyelia is a condition whereby fluid filled cavities appear in the spinal cord parenchyma. An obstruction preventing the correct flow of cerebrospinal fluid is caused by the brain itself, which blocks the foramen magnum preventing the proper circulation and drainage of the cerebrospinal fluid down along the spinal cord. This may cause an increase in pressure within the skull forcing both the brain and the fluid out through the foramen magnum. The resulting pressure on the spinal chord leads to fluid accumulation which can join together to form cavities.en
