The objective of my diploma work was the investigation of the genetic diversity among Hungarian pigeon circoviruses (PiCVs). I examined pigeon samples that had been found positive in the laboratory previously, together with two own samples of dead feral pigeons. I also collected stool samples from live birds of several columbid and other and screened with a nested PCR method designed for the replication associated protein gene (rep). The positive samples were further investigated with another PCR method suitable for the amplification of the entire gene (cap) of the capsid protein. The nucleotide sequences of the products were defined, and additional specific PCRs to obtain the missing genome parts were designed. The newly acquired sequences were compared with each other and other, previously published PiCVs, then they were analysed by phylogenetic calculations.en
