Abstract
The Bernese mountain dog is a breed of increasing popularity throughout the world. But unfortunately, as with many other pedigree dogs, they are victim to an array of genetic diseases, some of which reduce both the life quality and expectancy of the breed to a dramatic extent, in fact Bernese Mountain Dogs have one of the lowest life expectancy compared to other pure bred dogs their size. The aim of this work in its broadest sense is to examine the genetic status of the Bernese Mountain Dogs today with a further specific emphasis on a selection of inherited diseases that have a impact on their longevity and quality of life.
