Abstract
Hemangiosarcoma is an aggressive form of cancer in dogs. Invasive diagnostics are needed to obtain a definitive diagnosis, and it is rarely detected before it has reached an advanced stage. Surgery and chemotherapy only provide owners and pets with a limited increase in survival time, and there is poor understanding of the pathogenesis and mechanisms involved in this disease. Nevertheless, oncological research is moving forward quickly, and novel diagnostic tests and treatments appear promising. In a few years, less invasive diagnostics such as detection of haematologic biomarkers, or automated histopathology with reduced probability of misdiagnosis might be available.
