Abstract
D-dimer is a soluble fibrin degradation product originating from the plasmin-mediated degradation of cross-linked fibrin. Thus, D-dimer is thought of to be a biomarker for the activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis and is used as an ancillary method to rule out diseases such as thromboembolic disease and other haemostatic disorders. D-dimer levels may rise for a variety of reasons; it is not a disease-specific condition. As a result, a precise diagnosis cannot be established solely on the basis of an increase in D-dimer levels. The main objective of this thesis is to revise the meaning of D-dimer, compare D-dimer assays, discuss its relation to diseases, and its use in clinical settings and their critical investigation.
