Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of the ear mite, O. cynotis, in domestic cats hold in different parts of the country. Deep ear swab samples were taken from each ear for microscopic examination in veterinary clinics. All of the 300 cats had no clinical signs of earproblems. 53 of the 300 samples (17,7%; 95%CI: 13,6-22,5) were found to be infested with O. cynotis. There were more infested animals among the cats live in the country side (19,69; 52/264), than cats living Budapest (2,78%; 1/36). In our opinion, the reason is that, these cats have more contact with other animals in the outdoors, so they can be infested easily. Although the results showed no significant correlation between the infestation and the age or the sex, it can be determined, that the prevalence of the ear mites decrease with aging. The intensity of infestation was higher in the group of cats which hold with other cats or / and dogs (19,17%; 51/266), than in the group of cats living alone (5,88%; 2/34). In our opinion, this major difference can be explained, that the cats infested with ear mites more often from other cats or rarely from dogs.
