In summary, this thesis has explored the complicated and multi-faceted landscape of EHV, with a particular focus on the 2021 outbreak in Valencia, Spain. Through an in-depth examination of EHV virology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, transmission dynamics and control measures, we have gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges these pathogens pose to the equine industry and the sport of riding. The Valencia outbreak, which has been the main motivation for this thesis, has provided us with important experiences and insights, that have far-reaching implications for the health and welfare of horses and the equine industry.en_US
