Abstract

Dogs were the first animal to be domesticated. Over the years it has been revealed, through genetic and phenotypic research, that dogs originated from an extinct gray wolf population and were domesticated in the Old World. Due to inconsistencies in studies, ideas and methodologies there is still an ongoing debate regarding the date and geographic origin of the domestication of dogs. Fortunately, growing evidence can shed new light on the origin and evolutionary course of the dog. The latest research evidence predates the beginning of domestication to be approximately 33,000 years ago in East Asia, where the oldest known dog skeletons were found.
