Abstract
SUMMARY The authors examined retrospectively 47 cases of leptospirosis in four different domestic animal species, which were detected during 16 years between 1999 and 2014. Leptospirosis was found in swine, cattle, mares and dogs in 34, 8, 3 and 2 cases, respectively. Abortion was observed in 43 cases (swine 33, cattle 7, mares 3), acute leptospirosis in 3 cases (calf 1, puppy 2), and nephritis in 1 case (finishing pig). Characteristic gross pathological or histological alterations were found in 29 cases (62%). The leptospires were detected in all cases with immunohistochemical (IHC) method in different tissue samples, but only in 43 cases with Warthin–Starry silver staining. Leptospira pomona was evident in foetal tissue samples in 26 of 33 swine abortion cases (79%) with IHC method using specific monoclonal antibody reagent. Antibody production against one or several Leptospira serovars was detected in 29 of the 33 aborted dams (88%). No connection was found between the amount of average rainfall and the frequency of Leptospira cases. The origin of infection could be identified in none of the cases, and human leptospirosis was not found in connection with the animal leptospirosis cases.
