Abstract
This thesis explores the genetic underpinnings and breed-specific characteristics of the Icelandic horse, focusing on the DMRT3 gene, coat colour variations, and the BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Prediction) system. The primary objectives of this research are to investigate genetic traits, analyze the importance of coat colour diversity, evaluate the application of BLUP in breeding practices, understand stakeholder preferences, and explore the role of the WorldFengur database in managing breeding strategies. Through a literature review and survey analysis, the study examines how different groups of Icelandic horse owners—sports riders, breeders, and leisure riders—value these traits.
