Abstract

SUMMARY Background: One of the leading causes of losses in dairy cattle farms today is reproductive disorders caused by dystocia and improper problem handling. In the introduction, we explored postpartum reproductive problems and their treatment options. Objectives: Our retrospective study aimed to compare the frequency of dystocia (which connects with the number of assistants and the presentation of the fetus during calving), uterine diseases that occur after calving, and the effect of calving and involution on reproductive performance, the culling rate, and dam mortality. Materials and Methods: This field study was conducted in a Hungarian dairy farm. We compared the number and proportion of anterior presentation, posterior presentation, twins, stillbirth, retained fetal membranes (RFM), clinical metritis without RFM, clinical metritis after RFM, clinical endometritis, and the reproductive performance: time of the first postpartum AI, service period, number of artificial inseminations with the number of assistants during calving (0 or 1 assistant vs. >2 assistants) Results and Discussion: The prevalence of obstetrical assistance during calving, stillbirth, RFM-clinical metritis, clinical endometritis, and culling was significantly higher during a posterior presentation. The prevalence of RFM-clinical metritis, the rate of death, the number of artificial inseminations, and the duration of the service period were significantly higher and more prolonged in twin calvings. At the same time, the number of stillbirths, clinical metritis and endometritis was significantly different in the case of anterior presentation if obstetrical assistance was performed. In posterior presentation only the occurrence of stillbirths differed significantly. In the case of obstetrical assistance, some reproductive parameters were more favourable in anterior and posterior presentations, treating with various reproductive diseases after calving.
