Abstract

Infection of Toxocara cati in felines was examined in 275 cats around the country with simple floatation process in fecal samples. The overall prevalence of cats with Toxocara cati was 18,18%. 50 cats from the 275. Cats that were younger than 1-6 months old had the highest proportion of the infection. 25% of the intact queens and 30,65% of tom cats were infected. Our study did not confirm that there is significant difference between indoor and outdoor cats. In details the infection rate were 19,71% (41/208) in outdoor and 13,43% (9/67) in indoor cats. Examination of the fecal samples revealed that Toxocara cati is the most common endoparasite in cats. This is consistent with the findings of numerous other studies. Toxocarosis is a major helminth zoonosis which may induce an awareness campaign for the cat owners, to inform them about the importance of systematic dehelminthization and personal hygiene to avoid transmission to humans.
