Abstract

SUMMARY An „outbreak” of acute fibrinonecrotic tracheitis has been described in a Hungarian pig herd. One or two pigs from several consecutive, approx. 650 head finishing batches died with signs of acute respiratory distress due to severe fibrinonecrotic tracheitis over a period of five months. Diagnostic examination of affected tracheas and corresponding lungs from 7 pigs submitted for laboratory examinations revealed the presence of a variety of agents; however, in some cases tracheal lesions developed without detectable pathogens or associated major pulmonary pathology. These suggest the possibility of cough-induced tracheal damage as an initiating factor for this tracheal change in swine. The authors in an earlier publication brought up the possibility that a porcine counterpart of the bovine ‘honker syndrome’ exists. The data presented here further support this assumption. Along with the case description, the theory behind cough induced tracheal damage is discussed.
