| dc.description.abstract | SUMMARY The authors present the process of bacterial and fungal biofilm formation and its clinical significance, based on literature data. Biofilms are microorganism colonies embedded in an extracellular matrix, where microbes differ in physiology compared to their free-living planktonic counterparts. Biofilms are more resilient against environmental factors, including antibiotics and antiseptics. Besides their importance in human medicine they are primarily found in therapy resistant skin, ear and mammary gland infections in the veterinary field. The authors present the structural development, and the regulatory mechanisms of biofilm formation, and in addition, the usage of anti-biofilm agents in the veterinary medicine. | en_US |
