Abstract

Background: The pathological lesions in young chicks caused by Astro viruses are well documented in Hungarian and internationals scientific journals. The disease known in broiler chickens is called avian nephritis and includes mainly enteritis and nephritis. Based on our knowledge there is no description in the available literature about avian astrovirus induced pathological lesions in ostrich colonies kept for economic purposes. Objectives: While examining the background of early death cases of ostrich chicks the possible role of avian Astro viral infection raised, so we proved the presence of the disease beside chicken in ostrich, as well. Materials and Methods: During the diagnostic investigations we performed dissection, histopathology, and molecular examination on 1-2 weeks old ostrich chicks from a colony which were kept according to the technological standards. Results and Discussion: During the dissection of the ostrich chicks, we observed nephritis with the degeneration of tubular epithelial cells beside acute catarrhal enteritis. The histopathology revealed denudation of the intestinal villi in the duodenum, degeneration and desquamation of the enteric epithelial cells and also the renal tubular epithelial cells. The samples taken from the kidney and duodenum were positive for Avian Astro Virus (AvAV) with the PCR examination and later sequencing. The detailed analysis and identification of the detected genome sequence will take place later to clarify the origin and the virus family classification.
