Summary
Background: At the Department of Genetics and Animal Breeding (University of
Veterinary Medicine, Budapest) the oral exams on Genetics and Animal breed ing are preceded by a compulsory practical exam. In 2013, a new internet-based
practicing and examining system was introduced (GAT – Genetics and Animal
breeding Teaching system). Since then every activity in that system has been
logged and, as a result, 72 122 records were collected.
Objectives: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the first three years
of the usage of the system, to assess the students’ learning habits and also to
think about the possible ways of the improvement of the teaching method.
Materials and Methods: Since 2013, 1280 students have taken an exam using
the GAT system (532 of them used the system in Hungarian, 482 in English and
266 in German language). 72 122 records from the GAT system were analysed by
statistical methods and presented in figures, as well. A survey on the opinion of
students about the GAT system was also conducted (the survey was available in
all of the three teaching languages).
Results and Discussion: There were no relevant differences in the results of
the exam between the groups taught in Hungarian, English or German (p = 0,965).
According to the log file when the number of exercises done by a given student
exceeds 100 / semester, the chance that he/she fails the exam expected to be
very low (OR = 0,1052; 95% CI = 0,0142–0,7771; p = 0,0273). Most of the students
begin practising three days before the exam. The amount of exercising has more
influence on the result of the exam, than the date of the beginning of exercising.
Eighty-two percent of students stopped practising when their best result has
been reached, while others continued practising, supposedly in order to check
how solid their knowledge is and/or to reward themselves by doing so. Evening
and night times are preferred for practising. Based on the results of the survey
(i.e. taking into consideration the opinion of the students) we can say, that with
increasing the number of test questions and/or the implementation of other
improvements of the GAT system the efficiency of it will be supposedly even
better.
