Abstract
Summary Background: The authors present the clinical manifestations of the torsion of the spleen and the liver lobe in dogs through their own cases. The splenic torsion was diagnosed in a young (5 years old) German shepherd male, the hepatic lobe torsion was seen in a female Mastino napoletano (1,5 years old). Objectives: These acute diseases showed the signs of shock by the physical examination (hyperthermia, anaemia, increased capillary refilling time, abdominal pain in the epigastric region). General weakness and haematuria were also diagnosed. The laboratory tests indicated anaemia, inflammation (increased level of the white blood cells) and elevated level of the liver enzymes by the blood analysis. The exact diagnosis was confirmed by abdominal ultrasonography in both cases. Results and Discussion: In the case of torsion the ultrasonographic structure of the spleen and the liver lobe are typical: decreased level of echogenicity and dilated, thrombotic blood vessels with thickened and echogenic walls in the parenchyma. Peritonitis (increased echogenicity of the peritoneum) and free abdominal fluid are also presented in such cases. Abscess in the liver parenchyma is very rare in dogs but it was also diagnosed in this case. After the operation the prognosis is good in the cases of splenic or hepatic lobe torsion, but became poor in chronic cases, in the case of reperfusion or septic complications.
