SUMMARY
In Hungary, such as all over Europe, the main threat to officially bovine tuberculosis (bTB) free herds is posed by wildlife reservoir. By traditional test and slaughter control method further success cannot be achieved. Both international and
local experiences suggest that improvement cannot be reached without strict
policy amendment on wildlife management. The authors reviewed the recent
European and Hungarian bTB control measures with the aim of highlighting a
need for modernization. Elaboration of health rules for wildlife management,
definition of 'bTB endemic area' and 'officially free wildlife population', bTB specified game meat inspection protocol and regular surveillance in zoo animals were
determined as the most important elements of an updated future regulation.
