SUMMARY The authors review the main aspects of the effects and major clinical uses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in avian species. The NSAID drugs are frequently applied medicines in human and veterinary practice alike. These are potent remedies to control inflammatory and painful disease conditions. Some members of NSAIDs also possess antipyretic, antispasmodic (visceral), and anticoagulant effects. In this review the mechanism of drug-action, pharmacokinetics, and clinical aspects of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents are introduced. Furthermore, the possible side-effects are also detailed. Sensitivity to NSAIDs differs significantly between species and within species individually. Risk assessment is highly recommended before their administration, since these drugs do not eliminate the underlying cause of the disease (symptomatic treatment), and the inappropriate usage may induce toxic effects in the treated animals. Several studies justified the avian species’ extreme sensitivity to the side-effects of NSAIDs which results in severe renal failure and gout (uricosis) leading to life threatening condition. In conclusion, the application of NSAIDs might have clinical significance in bird diseases; however it is substantial for the practitioner to be aware of the applicable NSAID substances in the particular avian patients. Practitioners should be sufficiently informed about the permitted dose to avoid toxic symptoms. Nevertheless, the withdrawal period has to be accurately determined when NSAIDs are used in foodproducing birds.
