Abstract
The adoption of a dog it is not an easy decision. Many people are not ready to have a dog which can lead to high number of abandoned dogs, unexpected puppies and to the increased number of the stray animals. The adoption is a possibility for them which is mostly regulated. The legal structure concerning the animal law and animal welfare contains a lot of legal instruments on two levels. The first level is the community level of the European Union which involves the most important regulations and directives (and individual decisions as well), which are added by the legislation of the national level. In connection to the legal background we should underline the role of the shelters in the adoption, as the most important and most used elements of the adoptions.
