It is one of the oldest recognized breeds in the United States. The breed originated in the early 1600 as a cross between the English Thoroughbred and native horses of Spanish origin. The name originate from their ability to run a quarter of a mile faster than any other breed, hence the name, the Quarter Horse. Although the breed has existed for 400 years, the breed registry only began in 1940.
