Health status of selected canine brachycephalic breeds : (Review of literature)
Abstract
The brachycephalic skull conformation, lead to increased risks of disease in the three selected breeds. The English Bulldogs and the Pugs with pronounced exaggerated features seem to be the most affected. Predisposed conditions include ocular, dermatologic, respiratory and reproductive disorders. Studies show that all three selected breeds are to some degree negatively affected by
their unique complex skull structure. Today’s health status of the selected breeds is parallel with their breeding history. It is a result of selective breeding
with an aesthetical versus functional focus.
