Age determination of dogs by dental radiograph of the caninus tooth

Abstract

The age determination in several species with different kind of techniques is well known and widely used especially in archaeology and forensic odontology. In general the age estimation by the pulp tooth ratio of the caninus in dogs is the only applicable method, besides the determination of lens transparency and the conventional methods. The aim of the study was to prove the reliability of the computer program developed by Dr. Korthäuer, which estimates the age in dogs by an x-ray picture of the caninus tooth. Furthermore, in this study an own mathematic model was created by determining the pulp- tooth area by an imaging software on the same set of x-ray pictures from dogs of known age, which were used with the program of Dr. Korthäuer. In the study 34 x-ray pictures, in oblique direction, from the maxillary caninus of dogs of different size, age and breed, were collected and analyzed. The statistic analysis reveals a good accuracy in dogs up to three years in both models. The equation represents the age in month as a function of x (pulp/tooth ratio) (Fig.4) Age dogs= 17,125ln(x)-2,8015. On the basis of the calculated confidence intervals, the measurement with the Korthäuer model is more accurate. Nevertheless, the measurement by a standard imaging software and the calculation by the equation presented above is a good and practicable method.

A különböző fajok kor meghatározásának egyes metódusai jól ismertek és széles körben elterjedtek. Kiemelt fontosságúak a régészet és a törvényszéki fogászat. Általánosságban megállapítható, hogy kutyák esetében a kor megállapítására két módszer alkalmazható, a caninus vizsgálata vagy a szemlencse áttetszőségének elemzése. Tanulmányom célja a Dr. Korthäuer által fejlesztett számítógépes program használhatóságának elemzése. A program segítségével a caninusról készített röntgenkép alapján megbecsülhető a kutyák kora. A munkám során egy saját matematikai modellt is kidolgoztam. Egy képkezelő program segítségével vizsgáltam a kutyák caninusának pulpa részét olyan egyedek esetében, melyek életkora rendelkezésemre állt. Az általam kiválasztottam egyedeket egyben a Dr. Korthäuer által létrehozott programmal is vizsgáltam. A tanulmányomban különböző korú, súlyú és nemű kutyák felső állkapcsán elhelyezkedő caninusáról készült 34 darab oblique röntgenfelvételt elemeztem. Statisztikailag megállapítható, hogy a modellek 3 éves korig vezetnek releváns eredményre, utána jelentősen torzítanak. Az alábbi, általam létrehozott egyenlet segítségével megállapítható a kutyák hónapokban kifejezett kora: Kor Kutya = 16.951 Ln (x) – 2.67, X: a fog pulpa részének a fog teljes területének aránya A mindkét módszer esetében meghatározott statisztikai konfidencia intervallumot alapul véve megállapítható, hogy a Korthäuer módszer pontosabb eredményre vezet. Ennek ellenére kijelenthető, hogy a fent leírt saját módszer szintén hasznos és a gyakorlatban is jól használható becslést ad.
