dc.description.abstract | SUMMARY
Background: One of the major challenges in modern poultry industry is to pre-vent losses caused by coccidiosis. Ionophore antibiotics are widely used, despite that these compounds can have toxic side effects. Recently the possible sub-clinical effects of these chemicals gained increasing attention. Objectives: The authors examined a Hungarian industrial broiler flock, where degenerative muscle lesions arose. The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between feeding ionophore antibiotics and the evolvement of such lesions.Materials and Methods: The examined population had been divided into groups, where different, ionophore and herbal coccidiostats were administered. Routine diagnostic necropsies were performed weekly, muscle samples were examined with a semi-quantitative histopathological method. Results and discussion: The muscle degeneration had been observed equally in all groups, and the statistical analysis failed to detect significant negative effect of ionophore treatment versus the control group, so the causative cor-relation between ionophore treatment and muscle lesions have not been con-firmed. | en_US |
