dc.description.abstract | SUMMARY
Background: Serum biochemical analyses in horses are important to determine the correct clinical diagnosis of general diseases and also some infectious and parasitic diseases. Reference values of blood parameters may vary depending on the breed, age and they can be affected by breeding conditions as well. Objectives: The aim of the study was to monitor changes in selected biochemical parameters in 12 cold-blooded foals of the Norik Muráň breed from the 1st day of foaling until 60th dayof life. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were collected from v. jugularis using vacuum tubes on the first, third, sixth and eighth week of age. Biochemical parameters such as glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and cholesterol, and from the electrolytes phosphor and kalium were determined by COBAS c 111th analyzer. The results were statistically evaluated using the Correl test and the differences were evaluated between all groups by Student t-test. Results and Discussion: Age was negatively correlated with glucose (p <0.01), albumin (p <0.05), alkaline phosphatase (p <0.01) and cholesterol (p <0.05), while positive correlation was found with aspartate aminotransferase (p <0.05), phosphorus (p<0.05) and potassium (p <0.05). Data obtained from this study can enhance our understanding of the biochemical and mineral parameters in these species allowing the veterinarians to establish appropriate interpretation of the laboratory data and give these animals appropriate care. The results sug-gest that some serum biochemical indices in foals may be markedly influenced by age. This should be taken into consideration when interpreting the biochemical profile of young foals of the breed Norik Muráň type. | en_US |
