Abstract
The authors show the importance of anti-inflammation and pain relief in pig health and highlight the animal welfare aspects. They point out that in many cases it is difficult for the veterinarians to select the right anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs in pig medicine. The aim of this summary is to help to understand the differences between the currently available NSAIDs. Currently, there are 5 NSAIDs such as meloxicam, flunixin, tolfenamic acid, ketoprofen, salicylates and 2 so-called minor analgesics (paracetamol, metami- zole) available to veterinarians in the European Union. In addition, there are also authorised glucocorticoid agents which are not covered by the present review. The need for anti-inflammation and analgesia at different ages is both essential for successful surgical procedures (castration, tail docking) and for adjunctive therapy of infectious and non-infectious diseases. In addition, adequate pain relief promotes animal welfare.
