The physiology of an organism is very complex. Most if not all of the topics surrounding internal medicine are on one hand unique, but are on the other hand tightly dependent on each other’s mechanisms. Thus, when one system is hindered, another system may show clinical signs. A very important example of this phenomenon is the disease caused by the Demodex spp. of mites that live commensally in the hair follicles. The disease caused by their overgrowth has been referred to as an “indicator disease” and is highly suggestive of a deeper, more sinister issue in the background.en_US
