Abstract
Akhal-Teke horses are known for their unique metallic coat shine. This study uses microscopic and proteomic analyses to investigate whether structural and proteomic differences in the hairs explain this characteristic. Hair samples from Akhal-Teke, Shagya-Arabians, Arabians and English Thoroughbreds were analysed. Significant differences in protein composition, indicate their possible role in coat structure. These results form the basis for further research to decipher the unique coat characteristics of this horse breed.
