dc.description.abstract | The bacteriological background of canine pyometra has been well known. There are a lot of studies made on the subject by other veterinarians and researchers. The major pathogenic bacterium according to the literature is Escherichia coli and β haemolysing Streptococcus. This thesis revealed that these two bacteria are still the most prevalent species that causes canine pyometra. The best prevention for canine pyometra is ovariohysterectomy, this surgical intervention will also prevent the recurrence of the disease. Canine pyometra is a big problem in Sweden since many dog owners do not spay their bitches. Dog owners in Sweden most commonly neuter their bitches if there is uterine disorder. The major uterine disorder that is the main reason for neutering in Sweden is canine pyometra. In Hungary on the other hand the disorder is not seen as often due to the fact that to neutering the bitch is more a routine procedure. It is to recommend that dog owners follow this protocol to best protect their dogs. | en |
