The cell surface proteins of SARS CoV-2, including the spike protein containing the neutralisation epitope, are constantly changing, which can cause changes in infectivity and the effectiveness of protective antibodies. The latter is thought not to have happened yet. A host change is also suspected for the Russian flu that spread in the 1800s, which is thought to have been caused by the bovine coronavirus.en_US
