SUMMARY
Specific haematological reference values are necessary for each animal species,
regarding the age, breed, sex and reproductive status. A total of thirty (23 pregnant
and 7 non-pregnant) Lipizzaner broodmares’ blood samples were analysed
for haematological parameters in this study in relation to their gestation status
(pregnant/non-pregnant) and the gestational period (early-mid/late pregnant).
The haematocrit, haemoglobin, red blood cell count and platelet count was significantly
higher in pregnant mares compared to their non-pregnant barnmates.
Regarding the period of gestation, the late pregnant mares (D > 210 of gestation)
had higher granulocyte- and white blood cell count, but lower mean corpuscular
haemoglobin than those in the earlier stages of pregnancy. The age of the mares
did not affect the haematological parameters in this study.
