SUMMARY
The authors present the health effect of flavonoid compounds, based on the current
literature. Dietary flavonoids demonstrate various beneficial health effects
including cardioprotective, antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic as well as antiinflammatory
activity. The authors briefly review the structural properties of flavonoids,
then their absorption and metabolism are discussed. The mechanisms
underlying the positive health effects mentioned above are also specified. While
flavonoid research primarily focuses on the treatment and prevention of human
diseases, veterinary relations could be important, as well. Flavonoids could be
used to destruct many pathogens such as Porcine Endemic Diarrhea Virus or
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus. Enhancing the immune
effect of vaccines (e.g. Newcastle Disease Virus) and immunomodulatory action
of flavonoids in case of pigs and poultry should also be underlined.
